Cheetah Runs

Cheetahs are the fastest living animals on land, capable of reaching speeds of up to 120km/h when chasing their prey. Running is essential to their overall health and wellbeing, particularly whilst they are in captivity. Running them ensures that their natural hunting instincts are not lost and it also has important benefits for their reproductivity.

Running Exercises With The Cheetahs

If you are taking a recommended overnight package, the last stop on your early-evening game drive will be the cheetah sanctuary. Here you will see them put through the paces of their daily runs by means of a pulley system, customised to accommodate the incredible running speed of the cheetah. You will enjoy refreshments and snacks while the rangers introduce you to the work of the Western Cape Cheetah Conservation.

The purpose of the early-evening runs is to ultimately release the cheetahs into the main reserve, so that guests will be able to view these magnificent creatures in their natural environment, hunting and breeding as nature intended them to. The breeding programs aim to increase the number, and genetic diversity, of cheetahs in Africa.

There is also the option for guests to interact personally with one of our tame cheetahs and should this not be included in your package, you can choose to include it as an extra. As the cheetahs are sensitive creatures every care must be taken to minimise their stress. However, should the weather permit, every effort will be made to provide guests with the opportunity to spend intimate time with the cheetahs.

We are always on the lookout for volunteers to assist with the cheetahs’ daily care and exercises. If you have a passion for wildlife and conservation, especially cheetahs, contact us now in order to become part of our volunteer program. You will assist in taking them through their daily paces, including the runs. There is much to learn and you will be duly enriched by this experience, while doing your part to conserve this precious big cat.
